Q: When is the best time of year to overseed?

A: Fall is considered the prime time for overseeding because there is competition with weeds, the nights are cooler, and there is more rainfall. Spring is the second best time, but you will have to maintain watering if Mother Nature doesn't help you.

Q: How much seed do I use for overseeding?

A: For overseeding, use 3-5 lbs. of seed per 1,000 sq.ft.

Q: What are the benefits of core aeration?

A: Core aeration relieves soil compaction and increases water flow and air circulation to the root zone. It also helps the microbes in the soil to become more active.

Q: How can I keep seed in place on a bank so it doesn't wash away?

A: Banks need stability to keep seed in place. Use erosion blankets, such as S75 or DS75. They are made of sterilizer straw and have jute netting already attached.

Q: How important is it to test the soil's pH?

A: pH is the acidity or alkalinity of your soil. Nutrients become unavailable to your grass if the pH is not within a certain range. Tall fescues and bluegrass prefer pH values in the 6.2 to 6.8 range.

Q: How do I control crabgrass if I'm going to overseed in the spring?

A: Use Tupersan premergent with started fertilizer. This is the only premergent that you can use during seeding.

Q: How much seed do I use on bare soil?

A: For bare ground seeding, you want to use 7-10 lbs. of seed per 1,000 sq.ft.

Q: When do I treat for grubs?

A: Grub treatment should be applied starting in May when they are close to the surface. Imidacloprid or Aloft can be applied for year-long control.
